How I became

a military surgeon

By Lev Boiko

Ukraine,
Nov 1, 2023

aiMy name is Volodymyr Grygorovskyy and I have been an orthopedic surgeon since 2006. My main interest is arthroscopic surgery, but I also do orthobiology, trauma surgery, and general orthopedics.
aiI joined the army, precisely the State border guard service, in 2014 as a volunteer when the real war started after the Revolution of Dignity. I was deceived a little.

We were surrounded by Russian troops and separatists for almost 2 months then managed to break out...

aiI was promised to serve in the military field hospital but when I arrived at the front near the border of Russia, they told me that currently there were no field hospitals in the state border guard service of Ukraine. So, I became a combat medic in the local border guard unit.
aiWe were surrounded by Russian troops and separatists for almost 2 months. We managed to break out but unfortunately lost 3 servicemen in our escape.
aiI had served in the same role from the end of November 2014 until then and this was the first time I was injured. I had a severe contusion and was rushed for treatment to the main hospital. This was the start of my service in front-line battle medicine.
