The city of Kharkiv

during the war

By Lev Boiko

Kharkiv, Ukraine,
Jan 7, 2024

aiThe worst thing is to realize that we are actually surviving, and we don't know what will happen next.
aiPeople are used to war. I can feel it and see it with my own eyes - when people walk around the city calmly during an air raid, as nothing is happening. As painful as it would be to admit, these are the realities of today.
aiThe autumn of 2023 was relatively quiet for local residents of Kharkiv. However, the end of December and beginning of the New Year has been very tense, with almost daily missile attacks right in the center. Of course, it morally destroys and exhausts people. Such a conclusion can be drawn from the comments and reactions of people in social networks and the news.
aiWhen I walk around, I see mutilated areas: destroyed residential buildings, educational institutions, businesses, and historical monuments. Sometimes it is impossible to fully realize that this is happening in my hometown. There are even such moments when faith in victory grows faint.

The scariest thing is realizing the fact that we are actually surviving, and it is not known what will happen next.

aiNow my city is going through difficult times. Yes, there is a full-scale war with our eastern neighbor - Russia. Yes, Kharkiv is under frequent shelling as it is only 30 km (19 miles) from the Ukraine-Russia border.
aiStill, the city continues to live and develop. People work, shopping centers and shops are open, students like me continue to go to University (although mostly online), people do not lose faith and hope for victory. This really makes me happy and motivates me to help my city in such difficult times.
aiFor me, Kharkiv is the most beautiful place on earth. I grew up here, and my entire childhood was spent in this city. I have so many happy memories of my past life.
aiEven now after all that has happened, I am sure that Ukraine will be free because good always wins over evil. And I know that every conscious citizen of our country does everything they possibly can for the sake of a common victory over the enemy.
