Vovchansk

a victim of Russian terror

By Ilona Batulina

Vovchansk, Ukraine,
May 11, 2024

aiWhen hostilities began in the east in 2014, I was 11 years old and I asked: "Mom, won't this happen here?"
aiLiving on the border with the enemy, I often wondered: "What if ..." but I always rejected this thought. Sometimes I scrolled through my mind, what would be the first thing I would take if I had to leave my home.
aiFleeing from occupation of our town in 2022, I took several toys that reminded me of a carefree childhood. I also carried a blue-yellow ribbon wrapped in a layer of paper and hidden in the smallest compartment of my purse to be safe in case of inspections. I bought it on a trip to Lviv back in 2019 and it is very precious for me.
aiAnd the books I received for my birthday or just for some holiday are so important to me. They are the best gift: from Vsevolod Nestayko and his "Forest School" to books about journalism.

But the books had to stay at home in Vovchansk which the terrorist state is erasing from the face of the earth.

aiI needed to leave my books in my house. Will Russia wreck it too? Words cannot convey the hatred, the evil, and the pain. Sometimes you just wonder: "Why is my city so close to the border?"
aiCurrently, I have hatred for everything Russian. After all, everything related to them destroys my country, my city, and has already destroyed my happy life and the lives of many innocent people without being provoked.
aiUgly Russia killed someone's loved one, someone's newborn child, someone's parents or grandparents, brother or sister, friend or girlfriend. Our soldiers die every day.
aiRussia destroyed places where important moments of people's lives took place. Russia is an enemy. Russia is a terrorist. And if someone still thinks that there is something good in them - I feel very sorry for you. Truth.
aiWe will win and defeat the enemy, for sure. Support those who need it.
aiGlory to Ukraine!
