Missing person

By Oksana Astapovych

Schulenberg, Germany,
Jun 14, 2023

aiI have understood that war is scary. Since I was a child, I have read many books about different wars. One that impressed me a lot is "War is not a woman's face" by the Belarusian author Svitlana Aleksievich.
aiLast summer of 2022, I read "On the Western Front without Changes" by the brilliant Erich Maria Remarque. I live like the hero, with the cruelty and senselessness of pain, blood and death. Every day, people die and are maimed, and in the news there are only a few words: "No changes on the Western Front."

I don't even know what is better: to learn about the death or about the capture.

aiThis spring I experienced it. "Our Armed Forces of Ukraine are holding Bakhmut, have partial success, advance 500 meters in a day." This news is driving me crazy because at the same time I am monitoring all possible resources to search for the wounded, dead, and prisoners.
aiMy own brother, an officer of the Armed Forces, together with a group of other fighters went missing near Bakhmut on April 30, 2023. According to official data, there are currently about 23,000 people missing in Ukraine. No one can know how many of them died, how many are captured by the Russians.
aiAnd after those videos with the inhuman abuse of our prisoners of war by the Russians, I don't even know what is better: to learn about the death or about the capture....
