Search for food

and medicine

By Yana Kosinova-Zhukovska

Kharkiv, Ukraine,
Aug 1, 2023

aiI continued every morning, until the shelling began, to go around in search of open shops or pharmacies (my father was taking life-saving drugs, and they were already running out). I found a working pharmacy and stood in line.
aiA man came up and tried to skip the line. He shouted that he needed to buy water (tap water in Ukraine is non-potable), his children had nothing to drink. There was desperation in his words. But the people did not let him in, replying that they also had children at home and needed water and medicines.
aiThe man froze for a couple of seconds, turned around and walked away. Then I heard glass break: the man broke a window in a tobacco shop nearby and started taking bottles of water from there…
aiCovid was still rampant in the city and many people needed antibiotics. On social networks, people begged for help and asked to sell the antibiotic for any money. I read a message; the girl's mother was dying from pneumonia.

I didn't understand from which side death comes. My body rushed to the shelter.

aiI had antibiotics left after my father's illness and I wrote to her. She said she was ready to pay what I would say. I answered her that I would give it for free, if she could come and pick it up, as there was no public transport where I lived. She agreed, but the next day she did not show up.
aiI think with horror how many elderly and sick people died in their homes in those days without help or from starvation. And there will be no reports on such people. They will not be noticed by the world community...
aiOn the fourth day, a small shop near my house was opened. I stood in line, hoping that I could buy some food there. I understood that without resupply we would not last long, I had already begun to reduce the portions that my father and I had.
aiThe whistle of a shell cut that morning unexpectedly. First one, then the other... I didn't understand from which side death comes. My body rushed to the shelter, which was very close. Two steps separated me from the door when I turned around and saw that a group of people from the queue, hiding from the flying shells, pressed against the cars.
ai I’ve read before that in no case should you do it, if a shell hits a car, it will explode and there will be many dead ... By an effort of will, I forced myself to turn back and rushed across the road to them with a cry: to the shelter, now!
