Orisya the Hospitalier

By Tetiana Larina

Ukraine,
Jan 17, 2024

aiOrisya is a medic in the "Hospitaliers" volunteer medical battalion. People call her by her first name. She says it's rather rare so there's no need for a call sign.
ai Before February 24, 2022, this young woman led a civilian life - studied and worked at the Ukrainian Catholic University. Then Orysia studied medicine in the scout organization "Plast" in which she was active at the time. This led her to take a medical course at the university. And soon the training became a big incentive for her to become part of the military.
aiFebruary 24, 2022 Orisya did not go to the front. At first, she volunteered: helping displaced people in Lviv and working in a military hospital. However, soon she knew she had to go to the front.
ai"I can't sit away as I have the skills of a paramedic. I believe that now everyone should do what he can," the girl explains her decision.

I believe that now everyone should do what he can

ai"Hospitaliers" proclaimed their main task is to remove the wounded from the battlefield as quickly as possible.
aiParamedics receive a call by radio-set and immediately go to the wounded, who are evacuated to the stabilization point . This is a place where you can usually stabilize a fighter, and then take him to a full-fledged hospital.
ai"Stabilization points are places which don't really look like a hospital. It is very fast help there, 10 minutes and we send the wounded on if they need more help. We transfer them to an ambulance and they are dashing to more professional hospitals," says Orisya.
aiFour people usually worked in medic brigade: a doctor, a paramedic, a traffic police officer and a driver. But last time they worked by "two", for example, a doctor and a driver. Orisya explains that much more wounded people can be taken away this way.
